GIRL IS MINE by Jane Elias

Sixteen-year-old Amanda has been spending time with her English teacher after school. When her father, her boyfriend, and her guidance counselor grow suspect of the relationship, she begins to question everyone’s motives – including her own. How can others know what’s best for you when you don’t yet know who you are?

PLAYWRIGHT STATEMENT: With Girl Is Mine, I am exploring the ways in which our identities emerge through the roles we play in relation to others, either in concert with or in opposition to their agendas. When does a relationship – in this case between father and daughter, boyfriend and girlfriend, teacher and student – cross the line from symbiotic to codependent? From complex to abusive? From mentorship to predation? Is it possible for a sixteen-year-old girl to have complete agency in her relationships with adults? Is it possible to heal an old wound by placing a bandage on a new one? For me so much in this play (as in the outside world) lives in a gray area: in what goes unsaid, in what’s almost said, and in what nearly happens. How much clarity and resolution is really necessary in order to move forward? I am grateful to Piper Theatre and this group of artists for working collaboratively to navigate these spaces as I continue to develop this play. ~ J. E.

Well Hot Dog! My Nathan's Famous Commercial with Andy Cohen is Now Live.

This could be a fun new trend… kicking off the new year with a commercial. Last year, I kicked it off with a Kohl’s, WW and Oprah’s 2020 Vision national tour commercial where I proudly proclaimed “I’m Making 2020 My Year.” Phew. You can see the commercial spot two posts below. Insert all the big eyes, mouth open, hand over head emojis you can find! I will write another post on the year known as TWENTY TWENTY. For now, I just want to highlight one nice bright spot that came out of a pretty trying year (to say the least). Booking this commercial at a really dark, uncertain, scary time where I felt defeated, sad and confused reminded me that you never know what’s right around the corner. Even in the midst of darkness, there is always the light. Let’s keep believing in DREAMS, MAGIC AND MIRACLES in this new year. Shout out to actor Justin Walker White who plays my brother in the spot, and an extra big shout out to Kimon Jackson of Jackson Studios for recording and directing my self-tape audition! Love you friend!

i shot this commercial in the year 2020. it was a much-appreciated bright spot in a trying year. read more on my blog: www.bettinagoolsby.com/updates. shot o...

Light Always Accompanies Darkness

My very own film that I wrote, produced and acted in… DARKNESS… was screened at The Academy of Communication in Healthcare, an annual international conference for healthcare professionals from all over the world. The screening was followed by a discussion with my dear friend, sorority sister and healthcare expert Aisha Langford, PhD. We joined forces and combined both our passions into a session called Blending Art and Women’s Health. We discussed what occupies many women’s minds today, how we see ourselves, how we speak to ourselves and how all of that influences our overall mental health. We enjoyed our time together in beautiful, sunny San Diego. Best work trip ever! File this whole moment and experience under *major 2019 career highlight.* Working with someone I respect, admire and love while also sharing an art project that is personal to me and resonated with other women in the room was just the bee’s knees. #notesondarkness #darknessfilm

Screenings, screenings and more screenings...

‘Tis the season for…SCREENINGS! The excitement is building for the holidays which are right around the corner…but as we head into the busiest and most festive time of year, I’d like to highlight all the work my film teams have accomplished thus far this year. I had the honor to perform in Outgrown, A Safe Place, and even my first film that I wrote, produced and acted in came back in a major way…Darkness.

Thank you to Rogala Productions for the work on editing and releasing A Safe Place. The film features Catherine Rogala, George Deihl and myself. It’s about two worlds colliding and how each character responds to information received. Top Shorts named our film in the top 40 best shorts category. It also screened at the Lift-Off Global Network, New York Short Film Tuesdays & The Roxy Hotel NYC Underground Film Festival. #aSafePlace

Outgrown is about two kids in the 90’s who love their favorite group, Outkast, and what lengths they’ll go to in hopes of going to an Outkast concert. You can read more about Outgrown in two posts under this one. Thank you to the Hip Hop Film Festival NYC, Gary International Black Film Festival, Twin Cities Black Film Festival, Gentleman Jack’s Real to Reel, The Harlem School of the Arts, Queen City Film Fest - NJ, and the St. Louis International Film Festival (coming up on November 17) for screening our film at their festivals. #outgrown

Get your ticket to see 'The Lincoln Dress' Before You Head off to Enjoy the 4th of July Holiday

As I mentioned in my special Juneteenth post (if you missed it, it’s 2 posts down), 'The Lincoln Dress' performances are well underway. Annie, Vasile, Aaron, John, Nick and I just returned from a weekend of performances in Albany, NY where 317 people joined us along the journey of the dress on which Abraham Lincoln took his last breath. We'll be performing again for three nights next week in Brooklyn at the Old Stone House (Mon 7/8 - Wed 7/10 at 8pm). I hope to see some of you there. Tickets and more info can be found here: https://lincolndress.brownpapertickets.com/.

Have a relaxing, joyful time with family and friends over the 4th of July holiday.

See you next week!

Happy Juneteenth

On this day, 154 years ago, enslaved blacks were declared FREE. This was two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Then 100 years later, black people were given our constitutional rights. Even with this progress, hope and ‘better days,’ we still feel the remnants left from years of slavery, our families being ripped from us, our homes burned and our spirits shaken. I am grateful for the sacrifices made and atrocities endured by my ancestors. I often think about what it means to be FREE. Although we are FREE from physical shackles and restraints, there are still many societal tools of enslavement today…both external and internal.

What does FREEDOM mean to you?

I’m in rehearsals for a new play, ‘The Lincoln Dress,’ and learning something new in each session. I work a full 8-hr day at my 'survival job’ starting at 6:30am, then I go to a 5-hr rehearsal right after, and then I commute home for another 1-1.5 hours. It’s a full day. But I’m loving it…and feeling lucky to be able to play, explore and stretch. Stretch my thinking, my capacity to be open, my listening, my showing up, my homework. Although my schedule and responsibilities are pretty set, interestingly enough, I feel very FREE.

THE LINCOLN DRESS

What might have happened to the dress on which Abraham Lincoln took his last breath?

Oh What a Knight!

Hi Friends! I’m excited…I booked a play! And it’s a fun one too. Written by actress and producer Eudora Tucker, the play is inspired by the movie “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” starring the late, great Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Following the Record Label Christmas party and unbeknownst to her husband Richard, Glenda has planned an after party at their home to continue the festivities. The guests of honor to this impromptu get together are Miguel Villanueva and his seemingly sweet, yet naïve wife Jessica. In the wee hours of this night, many revelations will come to light and the battle between two wounded souls will leave years of untold sorrow and casualties in their wake.

I’m a lucky gal in that I get to play with Eudora’s words and characters that she’s created. In addition to Eudora’s talents, I also get to work with two dedicated, passionate actors from the long-running hit play “Black Angels Over Tuskegee” — David Roberts (aka DBlack) and Anthony Goss. I am having so much fun in rehearsals. Our play goes up on Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25 at 8pm (be sure to pay particular attention to the Dates - we are going up During Memorial Day Weekend 5/24 & 5/25).

Live Merry!

I started to type “Be Merry,” but it didn’t feel quite active enough. “Live Merry” embodies the action I want to take into these last days of the holidays leading up to the new year and beyond. I want to “live merry” by going through life focusing on all the good things I have - the tribe of like-minded and like-spirited individuals, The Great Health(care), the adventurous experiences and courageous decisions, the pure joys, the belly laughs, all the people/places/things that feel good and are life-affirming. This by no means purports a perfect, blemish-free, flawless existence; it’s in fact the opposite. It’s acknowledging that there’s no such thing as perfection but choosing to see the beauty within an imperfect life nonetheless. To LIVING MERRY!

An Intimate Night

I had the honor of working with this special group of actors on a staged reading of playwright Lynn Nottage's timeless, beautifully written play "Intimate Apparel." The intimate evening was produced by Julia Kwamya and Margaret Curry and presented at Kickstarter's ultra cool workspace in Brooklyn.
